Now in its sixth year, the Scottish Artists Union survey gathers information on the challenges faced by artists and art workers in Scotland today and how these barriers affect their ability to build a sustainable practice.
It also helps those who are not familiar with the sector to understand more about the everyday realities and context in which artists work, and about the economic, social and cultural factors that affect them.
It is one of the union's most valuable organising tools. It is fundamental that the union has all the necessary facts and figures to challenge the economic inequalities in the art world and to negotiate fair pay and better working conditions for artists.

We hope to encourage all of our members to complete this survey. The findings will help to focus support where it is most needed to ensure a resilient and diverse visual arts sector. You will be pleased to know that this is our shortest survey yet. With changes to the way we gather and store membership information, we don't need to ask you where you live, work or what area of practice do you specialise in.
There are 7 sections with a total of 30 questions – some are a quick and simple tick box, some ask for more detail and narrative. It will take approximately minutes to complete depending on how much detail you wish to submit. There are questions about your earnings so you may wish to have a calculator handy to work through any figures.
The responses in this questionnaire are completely anonymous and will be treated with the utmost confidence. The data is received, viewed and analysed by an independent researcher The Lines Between; so please feel free to be candid. All data is aggregated during analysis, making it impossible for individuals to be identified. However, if you wish to provide contact details for future engagement you can do so at the end of the survey and this information will be held separately from your answers.
We appreciate that completing this survey takes time out of your working day but we emphasise the importance of this information and we greatly value your input. If you have any communication needs and would like an alternative option to the online submission then please let us know.
The Survey for 2018 is now closed. Thank You.
Look out for news about the final report in due course.
Since 2014, the Scottish Artists Union has asked its members about living and working as an artist and maker in Scotland. You can read more in our reports here.
